Hi, my name is Michael Oster and I love recording. Most people fear hurricanes. I see them as a recording opportunity. So, when Tampa was destined to get a visit from Hurricane Frances, I charged up my batteries and prepared to record. What I captured surprised me. It wasn't devastation and rage. It was kind of peaceful and strangely interesting... even useful.




I've used this CD to help me sleep.

I spent a good part of 2004 and 2005 with my father, taking care of him as he underwent cancer treatment. Many times we shared a single hotel room. Problem is that he snores... loud and I couldn't sleep. So, I used my own CD (this one!) to help me sleep. I play it whenever I need something to mask out sounds that keep me awake (I actually use the mp3 version on my iPod). Not its intended purpose, but it works very well.

Sound of a Dying Hurricane was recorded, edited and mastered by Michael Oster at F7 Sound and Vision, Tampa, Florida.


Technical notes.

I made this recording with a matched stereo pair of Earthworks QTC-1 microphones and a Grace Design Lunatec V2 microphone preamplifier to an HHB PDR-1000 DAT recorder. Editing and mastering were done on a 24 bit Pro Tools Mix system. This is the kind of recording equipment used in the production of feature films and award winning CDs.


BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE SOUND! "Sound of a Dying Hurricane" and one of my other CDs "Suburban Thunder" sound so great that I was paid to have them used in part of the Oscar nominated feature film "Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest".

If they sound good enough for a 4-time Oscar winning sound supervisior, then they sound good enough for anyone!
